AMD had a good year in 2017 with it’s Ryzen series as it costs lesser and performs on par if not better than it’s competitors. In 2018, the introduction of integrated graphics APUs based on Ryzen core will surely eat up the market share further.
Gaming market is niche but the overall desktop market is way bigger. As AMD has proven itself to be capable of delivering the best of Core/Thread performance and now with decent graphics capabilities, it will make it the defacto choice of builders in a matter of time.
The Ryzen 5 2400G is proven to be on performance levels close to that of a Intel which costs more. It as a graphics capability close to a GeForce GT 1030. If we do a simple calculation, would you buy a Ryzen 1400 + GeForce GT 1030 or just a Ryzen 2400G (with integrated graphics) ? Would you pay $169 for a Ryzen 2 2400G or $169 for a Ryzen 1400 ?
- AMD Ryzen 5 1400 Processor with Wraith Stea… by AMD for $169.99
- GIGABYTE GeForce GT 1030 GV-N1030SL-2GL sells for $79.99
- AMD Ryzen 5 2400G Processor with Radeon RX … by AMD for $169.00
At less than $600 USD, you can get a complete working PC with graphics that can play games and use it for office productivity. Below is a sample setup of components for your new PC.
- Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-02 Mid Tower Gaming Case $55.49
- Thermaltake Smart 500W 80+ White Continuous Power ATX 12V V2.3/EPS 12V Active PFC Power Supply PS-SPD-0500NPCWUS-W $39.99
- G.Skill 16GB (Dual Channel Kit) 3200MHz DDR4 Trident Z Desktop Memory (F4-3200C16D-16GTZB) $227.95
- MSI ProSeries AMD Ryzen B350 DDR4 VR Ready HDMI USB 3 micro-ATX Motherboard (B350M PRO-VDH) $76.98
- AMD Ryzen 5 2400G Processor with Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics $169.00
If you have a higher budget, you could opt for a X370 motherboard which gives you more PCIe slots, ram slots etc. The beauty of AMD is that it doesn’t phase out socket types or change the socket pin so that you need to make new purchase of peripherals when you upgrade. Thus, you can still use your original heatsink or change your components one by one.
Finally, I think AMD has got the chemicals right. The Ryzen 5 2400G is a formidable combination. you intend to start building a PC while waiting for high end graphics card pricing to dip.
