Sony, in response to the competition from Samsung, will supply image sensors to Apple for it’s next generation smartphones.
Sony’s image sensors are well recognised on mid to high end Android phones. In fact, most of the top notch phones choose to use the Sony IMX series of sensors. Things have started to shake up with competition from Samsung. Samsung also manufacture sensors and are widely used on many smartphones.
Sony’s IMX 989 1 inch sensor is well known and is used in the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. The larger sensor takes in more light and reduce overexposure or underexposure in certain settings. It also performs very well under low light environment.
Although Nikkei Asia report did not mention which sensor is supplied to Apple, we can easily guess that it should be a model that will match those used on high end Android phones.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is already equipped with a pretty impressive sensor. If it is to pair up with Sony’s sensor, Apple’s smartphone will be able to replace standalone cameras.
